Drugs Spirituality

Drugs, a medicine that cure and a medicine that cause harm as well. When taken in appropriate dose, drugs help to reduce pain and relief symptoms of illness. Many drugs if overdose, can be fatal to life. Drug abuse is the improper use of any drug, for purposes other than those for which it is normally prescribed or recommended. While some drugs are ‘fast-acting’, some drugs are ’slow-acting’. Some drugs are anti-depressants, some are appetite depressant, sedatives and there are painkillers too and so on. Some drugs need to be prescribed while some drugs can be purchased over the counter from the pharmacy.

We all know of illegal drugs such as heroin, Marijuana and cocaine. These are the popular ones which we have known for years. Ketamine, Ecstasy and some club drugs are probably ‘newer’ to some people. And recently people retort to other drugs such as Amphetamines and Anorectic, to ‘replace’ the consumption of illegal drugs. However, now amphetamines and most drugs that can be addictive are under prescription and controlled for these reasons.

Dependence on any type of drug is likely to lead to various physical, psychological, social and financial problems. Not all drug dependence involves illegal drugs; many thousands of people are dependent on alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine. Certain prescription drugs may also cause dependence. They include barbiturates, corticosteroids, and the benzodiazepine tranquillizers such as diazepam. Drugs that are addictive are no good for the body and these people will slowly become drugs addicts. Drugs addicts cannot work normally, they have problems with their families and these in turn affects their lifestyles and it has profound effects on their life. Very often drugs addicts end up with broken families, children being abused, the drug addicts may also commit crimes.

The most widely used and abused drugs are not illegal substances like heroin and cocaine but the readily available, and usually legal, stimulants such as alcohol, tobacco and caffeine. Cigarette smoking, drinking of alcohol are hard habits to break because nicotine and alcohol are addictive. Smokers often cannot kick the habit even though they know that cigarettes increase their risks of becoming ill or dying young. Most drinkers are aware that overindulgence can have unpleasant consequences, but many have either become dependent on alcohol or just do not realize how destructive regular alcohol abuse can be to their physical and mental health. Yet with help and determination, both smoking and alcohol abuse can be stopped.
