Joy

By peace | June 23, 2007

If you have been going through hard times and feeling pain, sorrow, grief, worry or fear, then be assured that this is coming to an end and a period of pleasure and gladness is coming to you. Just as the sun rises each morning and light follows darkness, so it is with our emotions. After pain and sadness, there will always be an opportunity for joy and laughter.

Both pain and joy are necessary in the balance of life. Be sure that you do not reject either of them. Don’t think of hurt, anger and sadness as bad and of joy as good — it is better to simply let all emotions come and go without judging them. If you did not feel anger, sadness and fear, then you would not feel joy either. They are opposite sides of the same coin.

Be aware of the joy, or the opportunity for joy, that is all around you. Don’t turn away from it or dismiss it. There is joy to be found in small things as well as big ones, and it is important to open yourself to it and allow it into your heart. Hear the joy in a child’s laughter, see the funny side of mishaps, appreciate the people around you who love you — and the ways in which they show this — and you will become a channel for joy.

Most of all, find the joy inside of you. Reach inside for the child waiting there and take him or her on an outing with you. See things with a child’s wonder, take in the beauty which is within your reach, laugh when something is funny or silly. Children have an enormous capacity for joy which so often is stifled when we reach adulthood. But however crushed joy is, it will never go away. All you have to do is dust off the cobwebs, set aside your anxiety and unleash your wonderful joyousness. Even if to start with you can only take tiny steps.

The more you do this, the more your health will flourish and the more successful you will be. Smile at those around you and you change the atmosphere instantly. And once you are giving our joy you will receive it back in ever larger quantities.
