Emotions As Cause of Diseases
By peace | July 25, 2007

We feel angry in response to something that has upset us in the past or present. In contrast, Fear, anxiety and worry are felt about what the future holds in store for us. Often the events we anticipate don’t materialize — knowing that we have wasted time feeling highly stressed for no good reason does not, however help a persistent worrier to stop. Worry and anxiety often affect the stomach and other digestive functions.
Not only does diet plays an important role in our health, stress play an important factor too. One of the serious effects of stress on our body is the impact on gastro-intestinal disorders and also on other diseases such as asthma, diabetes, heart problems, some forms of rheumatoid arthritis, many cancers and even our propensity to get colds. According to research, it was found that those individuals who were in acutely stressful situations were four times more likely to have a cold after the stress than beforehand. Where families were under more chronic stress, there was a higher incidence of infections than those with no stress. Another cause of stress is bereavement and the sadness and grief caused by it. This also has been found to influence our immune system.
The Chinese believe that Grief and Sadness affect the lungs and the heart. Infections are not the only problems to follow bereavement. The resulting suppressed immune system can cause cancer, arthritis, intestinal problems and many other conditions.
Although good feelings can be beneficial to our health, joy can also be a cause of disease. The Chinese understand that any extreme emotion can cause illness. Balance is the key word here. If we experience sudden and overwhelming feelings of joy, we can be left wide open. We may temporarily feel wonderful but our resistance to disease is lowered.
An extreme form of joy occurs when people become overexcited and manic. In this situation, people may remain excessively joyful and overactive for long periods of time. In time they can burn themselves out. Joy can also mean feeling ‘up’ but combined with feeling agitated and unsettled. The other side of this ‘joy’ can be a sad and empty feeling. Many people laugh and show joy to the world when inside they are deeply unhappy.

[…] I am definitely not leading a balanced life. My emotions are not balanced and this is a major cause of diseases. Everyday I have so much resentment and anger arises from parenting issues as well as housekeeping issues. I am not surprised that my health is deteriorating. I am spending more time working than relaxing. I have hardly any time for laughs. Luckily there is World of Laughs, the channel 8 show at 8pm on every Monday evening. The most funny and hilarious person in the show which I always look forward to is the old woman, Lao Zha Bo.Just got to know recently that she did not write the blog herself. She don’t speak good Mandarin nor English. But so what! She is being frank and whoever behind writing, this is honesty. As what some people claim she is disgusting, I don’t think so. Who are we to comment on people’s look and behaviour? No human is perfect. The pot is always calling the kettle black, almost everywhere we have politics as such. Just got very tired of this mundane world. […]
