Secrets To Good Health

By peace | August 2, 2007

Laughter and optimism have positive effects on our health. Two well-known and much quoted Chinese proverbs state that “A person should laugh three times a day to live longer” and “A good laugh makes you 10 years younger, whilst worry turns the hair gray.”

Laughing and keeping positive are really the secrets of good health. A research project carried out at the State of University of New York found that laughter increased the levels of an antibody called “Immunoglobulin A” which is found in the lining of the nose. This antibody helps people to fight illnesses. People with fewer antibodies were more prone to colds and other infections. The researchers asked 72 men to fill in a form every evening for 12 weeks describing how their day had been. Each man also kept a mucous sample which was analyzed for antibody levels. The research found that the level of antibodies was higher on the days where the men had laughed a lot or good things had happened, whilst on bad days the antibody level was lower.

Other research has found that people who are optimistic are likely to be healthier later on in their life than those who are pessimistic. One study began in 1940s. 99 healthy and successful graduates from Harvard University filled out questionaires which determined their level of optimism and pessimism. They then completed questionaires each year and were examined by a physician every five years until the age of 60.

Although all graduates were healthy when they left Harvard, the results showed that pessimism in early adulthood is a risk factor for ill-health in middle and late adulthood. By the age of 60, 13 of these people had died. Those who were more optimistic remained in better health and were at their healthiest between 40 and 45. Stunningly, there was a less than 1 in 1000 chance that these results were random — not even the statistical link between lung cancer and smoking is as strong as that!

[...] If people would just appreciate each other, do not take people for granted, then life would be better. Life is not easy and luckily there is World of Laugh to entertain and make us laugh. Everybody should respect one another, have empathy and have love and kindness for each other. That is easier said than done. If everybody just mind their own business and each of them just do their duty well, then this would be better. It takes time and it takes will and determination and the co-operation of everybody to achieve a peaceful world of harmony — no quarrels, no fighting, no war, no framing, no backstabbing, no killing, and so on… I look forward to watching World of Laughs, I need to laugh. Laughter is the best medicine. Laughter is the secret to good health. In Singapore, life is so stressful and we really need World of Laughs to make us Laugh more. [...]
