Fated To Be Obese?

By peace | August 8, 2007

Are you destined to be obese?
Many people are trying to lose weight. Unfortunately, not many people are successful in losing weight. Each of them have a favourite diet to accomplish the mission of weight loss. However, in the long run, diet failures outnumber successes by a large margin — only 10% of dieters are able to maintain their weight loss for any extended period of time. This is equivalent to 90% failure rate, according to Thomas G. Welch.

Some people feel there is a genetically controlled system in the brain that dictates how much fat your body should carry — a sort of “set point” or thermostat which, when you try to go ounder it by dieting, simply causes you to feel hungry all the time. You end up eating more until you go back to your former weight. This stable weight is the one that you usually return to after either dieting or overeating.

A study that tracked the weight of 4000 sets of male twins has added strong evidence to the genetic or set point theory. This study, conducted on identical and non-identical twins, showed that from age 20 to 45, the identical twins were twice as likely to have the same level of obesity compared with non-identical twins.

As we get older, we seem to gain weight easier, perhaps because of some change in the metabolism or maybe a change in the set point. Of course, reduction of exercise and activity might also have something to do with it. The only thing that seems to alter this set point effectively is adding exercise to your dieting. So, if you want to lose weight and be able to keep it off, you must do some sort of exercise, even if it is only a brisk walk.

Is these true? Nobody knows, but it is certainly a good idea for anyone to exercise. The best weight loss is gradual reduction in calories over a long period of time. Be balanced in your food intake and exercise. Do not consume more calories than necessary. Do not overeat. With more exercise, gradual reduction of calorie intake, I am sure anyone can reduce weight.
