Purpose of Holy Communion
By peace | August 27, 2007

Today the Holy Communion gathering session is a fast one. It is the third session for today and as it ends very early, Esther suggested having the fourth session on the same day. It was a wonderful idea.
Today, we learn about what is the thing that binds the community together. Some children answered the bible, and some have no answers. All the children and adults were very quiet. Most of the time it was Esther talking and the children and adults will answer only when asked.
The thing that actually binds people together as a community is not only the bible alone. In fact through our daily lives, there are many things that can bind the community together. Sharing the same interest or same hobbies in one’s life is part of binding a community together. Two children come together, whether they will become good friends a not, depend on same interest and hobbies. If they have a common interest, both of them love to play Rakion and other games, then they will spend more time together, they have a common topic to discuss. Soon, two friends will have more friends and soon a group is formed.
Many things worked on the concept of love. Where there is love, there is patience and tolerance. There is always conflicts in any relationship. For a relationship to grow, whether it is friendship or love relationship between brothers and sisters or husband and wife, there have to have forgiveness and the power to give and take. In any relationship, one person must always be the one who give in and willing to say “Sorry” or just patch up for the relationship to continue.
In the church, receiving bread, the body of Christ, during the Holy Communion is the thing that bind the church community together. By receiving the Holy Communion, it is the belief of every Catholic that we are receiving the body of Christ. The body of Christ, through Holy Communion, binds the church community together.
How does the bread taste like? Some children said it is sweet. But the truth is the bread is tasteless and it ‘melts’ in your mouth. You swallow the bread, not chewed. After receiving the bread, each of us have different feeling. Some people feel closer to Jesus, some feel more secure with their daily life, and still some feel refreshed.
Today, we read the bible Ephesians 4:2-6, but I will quote from 1-6:
Walk in Unity
I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called. With all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; “One Lord, one faith, one baptism: one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
As years passed by, everytime when we receive Holy Communion, we have different feeling and experience. When I was young, I don’t have much feeling at all, the purpose of receiving Holy Communion to me was just merely just part of the procedure of Mass, and receiving Holy Communion each time was to cleanse my sins. However, now I have different feeling. When I receive the Holy Communion now, I feel spiritually more nourish now. I indeed have a feeling of more ‘refresh’, like what Richard said as well. I can feel peace when I receive it now.
No wonder I had seen the signboard at the church one day that says “Come in and find peace…” Indeed, now I understand.

[...] Today, we made the worst choice again, or rather I made the bad choice. Since we were supposed to go St. Anthony Church, I thought we could eat there and walked across to St. Anthony. Richard was not optimistic at all about this idea. He does not like the place at all as the food is not nice. But the reason for me to go there was the food is edible, and I wanted a cool place, in other words, a good place to sit and eat, just to fill the stomach. [...]
