Hormones And Women

By peace | August 29, 2007

Unique among mammals, women have periods that neither signal a fertile time nor give an indication of desires. Our blood is a symbol of our difference and of the power to give life. It is a secret signal, a clock within clocks, counting out the years and the days. A woman will experience monthly periods for about half of her life. The four or five days of bleeding are only the end point of a cycle that affects almost every part of our bodies. The better we know the many different things that are happening throughout the month, the easier it is to live with our fluctuating moods, changing body shape, and the peaks and troughs of energy and desire.

In a woman’s life, there are four stages of development. They are puberty, the fertile years, the mid-life fertility and menopause. The endocrine system is the system of glands which produces the hormones that control all our body processes, from feeling happy to growing, from milk production to our response to stress. When, for example, the level of oestrogen released by the ovaries drops, FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) is released and the ovary will start ripening a new egg. The ripening egg follicle produces higher levels of oestrogen, which triggers the release of LH (Luteinizing Hormone). The developing egg then switches to progesterone production, which thickens the lining of the uterus and acts on the breasts, preparing for pregnancy. If the progesterone levels drop, menstruation starts.

Hormones such as progesterone and oestrogen play important role in women’s life.
The ovaries are responsible for the production of hormones. The hormones not only regulate our monthly menstral cycle, they have the power to control our body — causing PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome), heart disease, osteoporosis, etc. The opposing effect of oestrogen is Progesterone. Next to oestrogen, progesterone is the second main female sex hormone. It has many actions, but the main ones are that it relaxes smooth muscles; increases production of the waxy secretions of the skin; and raises the temperature of the body. The most important progestational effect of progesterone is its action on the uterus. Progesterone thickens the lining of the uterus, and induces the glands to secrete a nutritious fluid and become succulent, so that the fertilized egg may be nourished during the time it needs to take root or implant in the lining of the womb.

The cause of most diseases or discomfort to our body is the imbalance of these hormones in our body. Symptoms such as depression, tension, headaches, breast tenderness, water retention, bloating, low energy and irritability occurring pre-menstrually were thought to be the result of hormonal changes. For example, if the body has no ovulation, then there is production of more progesterone. Presence of more progesterone means that there are too much oestrogen in the body which may ultimately result in breast cancer, fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and PMS.

Human production of synthetic and natural hormones have helped women to cope with various bodily discomforts and in controlling diseases. For example, Hormone Replacement therapy which is being employed for the menopause women. Progesterone cream are used by women to relief the symptoms of PMS.
