Christians try to live according to the teachings of the Bible. The Bible is a compilation of many writings grouped into separate ‘books’ and is divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The word ‘testament’ means ‘covenant’. Written in Hebrew, the Old Testament is also the sacred scripture of the Jewish faith. The New Testament is shorter, and was written in Koine Greek. There are 27 books altogether, comprising:
1. Four gospels that tell of Jesus’ Life
2. The Acts of the Apostles, describing the missionary endeavours of the apostles, the Christian Church’s first 30 years of existence and the travels of Paul;
3. Twenty-one missionary letters to churches and individuals giving advice and encouragement; and
4. Revelation of John, which is a record of the visions which the apostle John saw on the island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea.
