Dressing Appropriately

By peace | November 13, 2007

This is another blouse I bought from Padini. I love Padini clothes very much. I wore this blouse with the grey pant I bought at Padini, the one I wore to Casablanca for swimming. I wore these to the church on Sunday. After that, the whole family went to Lim Chan’s house for a small gathering.

I came across a bulletin that said about the Dress Code for the church. The church had made a survey on the appropriate attire for the Eucharistic celebrations. Below is the findings:

Recommended Guidelines for Dress Code
1. For men

2. For women

Strictly Prohibited:

Singapore is such a hot weather. My wardrobe consists of mostly sleevless blouse, shirts and dress. Wearing clothes exposing my shoulder is considered my norm. I am not exposing my breasts or wearing something indecent. I wore sandals, bermudas and I feel comfortable. I am happy with that and for being comfortable and happy, I would enjoy my trip to the church. If I am wearing something uncomfortable like polo shirt in such a hot weather, I would not be able to concentrate in the church. I would be concerned with my body temperature, comfort and perspiration perhaps. Clothing to be are all external. They are materials concerned. Why should we be bothered so much about attire when the faith is more important? Imagine poor people who have no money to buy clothes. If they are given torn T-shirts or new T-shirts with words like ‘FUCK ME’ or even ‘SHIT YOU’ and others vulgarities, these are not what they want. In addition, illiterate like my mother would not know what these words means. To them, clothings are just clothing that can keep them warm and to protect their body. Everybody are old enough to be able to dress appropriately since they are being called themselves Catholic. Even if they do not understand the truth, they should know what is called respect for themselves and God.

Inner heart more important or External Beauty
So whether I am wearing clothes that expose my shoulders or not, clothes is not for showing off in church. For me, I wear clothes to feel comfortable and to look good, not to impress people. I do not need to impress to win. Win or lose, is just transient, never permanent. Today, you can be the first, tomorrow, you can be the second, the third. Everyday, there are people fighting to win, to be the top and the first. Why do we need to do that?

Catholic/Christianity — a name to show off or a living hard to be practiced
What if you are appropriately dressed like what the guidelines wrote. But your behaviour is only right when you stepped into the church. Outside the church, you do many unlawful acts and wrongful things. Just like rich women, married rich women who claimed themselves to be Christian but they commit adultery. Every Sunday, she goes to church. She has beautiful dress, attractive make-up, eat good food, enjoy good life with massage and spa (money from her husband). Yet she fools around with other people’s husband, break-up the family of people. Is this the right way? Dressing up is merely a ’show’ to impress the rest of your Catholic friends or Christian communities among you. Is it the right way then?
