Jesus Prepares The Disciples
By peace | July 3, 2008
They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went before them. And as the disciples followed, they were amazed and afraid. Then he called again the twelve and began to tell them what things should happen to him, saying,”Behold, we go up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man shall be delivered to the chief priests and to the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death and shall deliver him to the Gentiles. And they shall mock him, and shall beat him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him. And the third day, he shall rise again.”
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him saying,”Master, will you do for us whatever we shall desire?” He said to them,”What do you want that I should do for you?”
“Grant us,” they said,”That we may sit, one on your right hand and the other on your left hand, in your glory.”
But Jesus said to them,”You know not what you ask. Can you drink of the same cup that I drink of, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”
They said to him,”We can.” And Jesus said to them,”You shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of, and with the baptism that I am baptized you shall be baptized. But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it has been prepared.”
When the other ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John. But Jesus called them to him and said to them,”You know that they which rule over the Gentiles exercise strong authority over them. But it shall not be so among you: Whoever will be great among you, shall be your servant, and whoever of you will be the greatest, shall be a servant to all. For even the Son of Man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And there was a man named Zaccheus, the chief among the tax collectors, who was rich and who tried to see Jesus, to learn who he was. But he could not because of the crowd, for he was small in size. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way.
When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him and said to him,”Zaccheus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” And he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully.
When the people saw it, they all murmured saying,”He has gone to be a guest with a man that is sinner.” Then Zaccheus stood and said to the Lord,”Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I repay him fourfold.”
And Jesus said to him,”This day salvation has come to this house, inasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Gentile
French word from the Latin gentes, meaning ‘of the same race’ or, depending on the context and time period, ‘foreigner’ or ‘heathen’. Originally it was a general term for ‘nations’; later gentiles were referred to as simply nation members, indicating that they were non-jews, and thus were not considered part of God’s chosen people.
