Blessed Mother of Jesus
By peace | July 6, 2008
The story of Mary, the Blessed Mother of Jesus, is told in the New Testament of the Bible. For centuries, the few details of Mary that had been remembered were related as part of the story of Jesus, her son. Her unique relationship with him and his Father has made of Mary a figure who is both heavenly and temporal. Mary, in her role as Blessed Mother is the virgin who gave birth to the Son of God and she is often called Mother of God.
Mary has been revered for centuries as a woman particularly graced by God. She is endowed with qualities of Love and benediction that have endeared her to generations of Christian worshippers, and she is a figure of feminine grace and blessed love who is venerated for her compassion as well as for her relationship to Christ.
For many, Mary is the welcomed portent of salvation. Through her body the Word of God was given human form, and she is called Theotokos, a Greek word meaning “carrier to bearer of God in her womb.” To others she is more simply the devoted mother who gave birth to Christ, the Son of God, and is a divine expression of motherly love whose feminity helps balance an otherwise masculine Trinity.
Mary is known by many names and has been seen myriad times in a variety of forms: She has inspired the devout and cured the sick and is a blessing to those who call her name. To those not so devoted to Christian articles of faith, Mary is a symbol of fertility who links human needs with divine providence.
