Abraham

Dream of Abraham today, 23rd July 2008….
Abraham is one of the outstanding individuals of the Old Testament. God spoke to him personally, actually visited him in his home, and even considered him a friend. And Abraham loved God. He obeyed him, served him, and was even willing to sacrifice his son to prove his faith. Abraham is a biblical superhero, richly deserving a place in the Old Testament Hall of Fame.
God, creator of the splendors of the universe, wished to associate humans with His plans and His life. People were unwilling to trust Him. They wanted to decide by themselves what was good and what was evil.
To remedy this disorder, it was necessary for God to make Himself better known. He chose a people to whom He would reveal Himself. This people recognizes itself in the faith of the patriarch Abraham. Down the generations, the tale is told of how Abraham rejected the idols and listened to the voice of God. He came to know a God very different from the gods dreamed up by men, a God who wished to extend His blessings to all the families on earth.
Abram, which was his original name before God changed it, left Ur in Mesopotamia(known today as Iran) with his father Terah. His first settled in Haran(nowadays Turkey), then set off for the land of Canaan with his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot. He was a traveler and a nomad. God chose him to be the founding father of his chosen people, thereby promising him that he would be the father of a multitude of descendents. With that covenant, God then renamed him Abraham and his wife, Sarah, and promised them a son, whom they would name Isaac, a sign of God’s covenant.
The story of Abraham, an endless subject of meditation for his descendants, tells us that faith is a trusting abandon to someone who inspires certainty, someone we find because that person has been looking for us. Abraham died at a very old age and was buried in Hebron. His name appears seventy-five times in the New Testament.
