Holes In The Cave

By peace | March 4, 2010

Photograph capturing a bird nest high up among the branches of this tree

Photograph of zoom-in view of the bird nest high up among the branches of this tree.

It was the First Sunday of Lent. On the way walking to church, we saw pigeons (black, brown, and grey). We saw the peaceful doves as well. Before reaching the church, Clara pointed this nest to me. We stopped and looked up for the nest. It was indeed a bird nest. It was such a rare opportunity to see a bird nest in Singapore. Never in my life had I seen a real bird nest like that in the nature. Nowadays, birds do not seem to build nest anymore in this modern urban Singapore. Birds like pigeons have their homes ‘build’ in MRT pillars as shown in the photograph below.

Photograph showing pillars below MRT tracks. Above the pillars are birds living in the crevices.

Upon arrival at the church, I was surprised to see the words ‘Holes In The Cave’ just above the choir. I took a photograph of it as shown below. I wanted to zoom in just to see the words alone and not the rest. But before I could do that, I was approached by someone, the church warden. We always arrived at the church early so that we can have time to settle down. But little do I know that even so, I was ‘harass’ by the church warden the moment I was so surprised and filled with awe to see the words on the wall. The church warden said,”Please off your handphone!” Even before I came into the church, my handphone is already set to silent mode. In the church, I never disturb anyone. I always wanted my family to reach there early and we tried not to be late.

St Anthony Church, First Sunday of Lent, 21 February 2010

This photo above shows St Anthony Church during first Sunday of Lent on 21 February 2010. The theme for that week was Holes In Your Cave as can be seen in the photo and as mentioned earlier. I was so curious about what this is all about.

During the Gospel reading or when Father Terence was talking, again I was approached by the church warden. This time, she told me to go to the crying room. Isaac was not even crying or yelling or making a big noise. I was again disturbed. I was interrupted and my ‘flow’ with father Terence was gone. I could not follow what he said after that. This was so infuriating, very infuriating. When I was looking after my baby, I was multi-tasking — trying hard to listen as well as caring for my baby. But the moment they come to interrupt me, everything is gone. I hate this…. this is indeed HOLES in the cave….

On the same day, I was approached by the church warden twice, and again, our family was sitting at the same place of the church (at the back pew)…
